Marksmanship Practice
We begin marksmanship practice on Monday, 30 August at the Northwest Suburban Boy Scout Office, 600 Wheeling Road, Mount Prospect IL 60036. We will practice each Monday and Thursday. We leave WHS immediately after school and will be at the BSA office until 5pm. No transportation is provided from the other schools. You can reach an instructor at 224-522-6735/224-715-2690 on practice days.
We know it is not an optimal schedule for many students. We plan to move the range by mid-September and will then adjust the schedule to fit student availability, including periodic weekend practices.
On 15 Sept, a safety brief, test and pledge will be provided to all cadets in the unit. You will not be able to shoot unless you have completed the test and pledge.
Practice is open to any cadet, but Marksmanship Team members have priority. If you are on the Marksmanship team, you are expected to make all practices.
Early Dismissal 8 Sept
Due to Rosh Hashanah, the NJROTC class will end at 1830 on Wednesday 8 Sept. Busses will depart WHS at that time.
Seamanship Trainer 15 Sept
Class on Wednesday 15 Sept will be held at the Seamanship Trainer at Great Lakes. Cadets will be picked up from their schools as normal (WHS cadets meet behind WHS after school). This is a mandatory 'fieldtrip.' It IS the class. Athletes are excused as they would for regular class, but they will not be able to arrive late (everyone will be at Great Lakes). There is a cost of $5 for pizza and soda. Uniform is the Navy Service Uniform (NSU- Khaki shirt, black pants).
WHEELING NJROTC Event Policy
We will many activities that cadets can voluntarily attend. Usually it is first come, first served as far as who can attend. However many of our events will be limited to one mini-bus (14 cadets). Therefore while first come, first served is still one of the selection criteria, we will also try to spread the opportunity around for 'good deal' events. We will also factor in when cadets have volunteered for the 'not-so-good' deals or have helped the unit We will also take into account how often a cadet has not worn their uniform when required or has been a 'no-show' for previous events. Money is not a factor in cadet selection, and if money is an issue we may be able to sponsor cadet participation. (Note, cadets asking for assistance in paying costs must participate in fundraising for themselves and for the unit.)
NJROTC ON-LINE!
Starting 25 Aug (after class), cadets will sign-up for NJROTC events on-line using 'Moodle.' Cadets will be given an enrollment code during the first class night. The enrollment code will let them participate in NJROTC Wheeling's 'Naval Science ALL.' In that section, there will be listed that events available for sign-up. You can read a description of the event, and when the enrollment opens you can indicate if you want to attend. Cadets can also see who has already signed-up and you will know when the enrollment period ends. Shortly after the enrollment period ends, you'll be able to see if you were selected for the trip or are on 'standby.' Cadet without internet access at home can sign-up for events at school or on Wednesday nights.
Cadets will be given a quick lesson on Moodle the first class night...but if you want more information you can find the District 214 site by typing 'd214 moodle' in your search engine. You may need to select the Wheeling category to find the NJROTC classes listed . You can also learn more about Moodle itself at www.moodle.org.
Future plans are to enable cadets to take advancement tests on-line, review class work and homework assignments, make up missed tests, get updated unit information and join discussion groups on various Wheeling NJROTC topics.
PT Practice 28 Aug
Cadets interested in joining a Physical Fitness team or in just working out should meet at the WHS fitness center on Saturday, 28 Aug at 0800. The fitness center will be open at 0730 for those who want to stretch or lift weights, and we will do a light workout beginning at 0800. Practice will be over by 0900. Future practices are To Be Determined (TBD).
Night Orienteering 10 Sept
We will participate in night orienteering (and evasion skills) at the Boy Scout event in Wilmont WI on 10 Sept. We will leave WHS afterschool at 1630 (4:30 pm). We do NOT plan to remain overnight...but instead return around 1 or 2 in the morning (maybe after a stop at Denny's!) Sign-up opens on-line after class on the 25th and closes on 3 Sept. Cost is $10. Wear appropriate orienteering clothes...boots, dark clothing/camy recommended and bring money for two food stops.
Chicago Area Orienteering 12/26 Sept
The Chicago Area Orienteering club hosts meets a local forest preserve on Sundays. We will participate as a unit on the 12th, and probably on the 19th depending on participation. You can ride a District mini-bus departing WHS a 0830...or meet us at the event location (refer to planning calendar's 'button' event description). Sign-up opens 25 Aug.
Overnight Orienteering/Camping/Canoeing 24 - 25 Sept
We will participate in the annual Orienteering/Camping/Canoeing near Indianapolis. One bus will leave during school hours on Friday. That group will have opportunity to do a leadership confidence course and Zip Line. The second group will leave after school on Friday. Both groups will camp overnight, then do orienteering and canoeing the next day. Both groups will return late Saturday night. Cost is $40 for canoeing, camping, overnight, and 3 meals. The Zip line and confidence course will cost approximately $25 extra. Sign-up opens 25 Aug.
Marksmanship Camp Ft Benning GA 29 - 31 Oct
Cadets have the opportunity to attend the Army 'summer camp' this October. Cost is $250 and includes lodging for the cadet and a guardian. Go to www.juniorshootercamp.org. We have NRA funding, we may be able to reimburse cadets for all or part of the cost of the camp. (You must agree to participate on the marksmanship team if you receive funding assistance). You will be responsible for your own transportation and incidental expenses. You will be able to use our rifles and ammunition (if needed).
Cadet In Charge:
If you are a Cadet in Charge of an event, you are reminded of your duties which always includes an After Action Report. See Cadet in Charge Duties and After Action Report..
.
Uniform Policy.
Wearing the correct uniform ALL DAY on uniform day is always required, and it does count towards your grades. Still, we have many cadets who wear the uniform only to the night class. Effective immediately, cadets who don't wear their uniform when required will not be eligible for any 'good deal' trips and competitions for 30 days. When NJROTC sweats/T-shirts are prescribed, the unit T-shirt is required.
ACT Preparation Available FREE
|
The NJROTC has paid for a stand-alone program to help cadets with test-taking strategies for ACT/SAT and other standardized tests (No child left behind included). There is no cost, but because the motivation for cadets to complete the course seems to be tied to guardian and instructor involvement, there is a notification letter for guardians and instructors will have access to cadet accounts. CADETS WHO COMPLETE THE PREP COURSE WILL EARN THE ACADEMIC RIBBON! Cadets can register for ACT or SAT (not both). We recommend ACT unless you're already taking ACT prep courses and you want to check out the SAT (used mostly by colleges on the East and West coasts). Register at http://jrotccollegeprep.com. |
