What's New:

Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC)

NJROTC is a course in leadership, teamwork and citizenship, using studies about the Navy as a common core. Students take the course as an elective and receive a grade that counts towards graduation and  their GPA. Only the academic class and unit activities are mandatory, but cadets are highly encouraged to participate in the 'extra-curricular' fieldtrips, teams, and events. Students are NOT members of the military, though they wear a 'regulation' military uniform once each week. There is no military obligation, and students have no 'status' within the military. There are definite benefits to those students who are considering a military career, but the accession rate of high school graduates going into the military from NJROTC is no different than the non-NJROTC population. The program is designed to help students be successful in what-ever career or endeavors a student pursues. The unit mission is to help develop more informed and responsible citizens. The goal is to develop young leaders.

5 Mar 08 First Aid Training (and Marksmanship Training)

Cadets will receive First Aid training on Wed 5 Mar, therefore cadets should wear sweats. NJROTC Blue cadet shirt and Navy sweatpants are mandatory. If you don't have NJROTC shirt or Navy sweats, you must wear the winter blue uniform. Hopefully we won't need to apply those first aid skills for the 14 cadets will have an opportunity to go to the marksmanship range to shoot. Priority will be to those cadets who have taken the marksmanship test and are NOT on the rifle team.

12 Mar Parents Night/ Awards Night

Parents Night and Awards Night is on 12 Mar. Parents night starts at 1900 (7pm) followed by awards and promotions at 1930. See the current list of awards and promotions. If you are not on the list, check with staff/NSIs Wednesday 5 Mar (we know some advancements are still in process...but still check on them if you are expecting to be promoted but don't see your name).

19 Mar 08 Swim Call (and Marksmanship Training)

Cadets will recieve water survival training on Wed 5 Mar. The training is followed by 'open swim.' All cadets, unless medically excused, are expected to swim. Fourteen cadets will go to the marksmanship range to shoot instead of swimming.  If you expect to swim or shoot, you should wear sweats. NJROTC Blue cadet shirt and Navy sweatpants are mandatory. If you don't have NJROTC shirt or Navy sweats, or you know you are not shooting or swimming,  you must wear winter blue uniform.

Climbing Wall

The Riverside Park District is making a trip this summer to 'Vertical Endeavors,' a climbing facility on 28 June. They would like to know how many cadets might be interested in joining their group. This will be a Park District (not NJROTC) event, but a great opportunity to have fun and travel together as transportation is provided. Total cost for transportation, 2 hours of instruction, and 2-3 hours (or more) of climbing is expected to cost $30. Please sign-up if you are interested. We will get a firm commitment from you to go later...but mark your calendar and let us know if you are interested by signing up.

Illinois Boys State and Illinois Girls State

Juniors (next year's seniors) can volunteer to go to Boys State and Girls State. Boys State runs Jun 8 - Jun 14. Girls State June 15 - 21. Both opportunities are excellent experiences and look great on college resumes. While we think Leadership Academy LA is the premier leadership event, if you haven't gone to Girls State, pick that over LA! The local posts and auxiliaries usually sponsor as many qualified candidates that we can provide. If you're interested, sign-up or see LCDR Morse ASAP.

Web Page

Now that the Pass-in-Review is over, we will be implementing a new webpage format next week. The new format will take advantage of the latest software, but if you don't have the capability to download the new format, you will be automatically directed a generic format. Once we try the new page, let us know if you have trouble accessing it. We'll make a permanent switch as soon as we can confirm it works for everyone.

Scholarships

Navy League Scholarships

The Glenview Council of the Navy League provides two $500 scholarships for NJROTC graduating seniors. There is a one page essay and an application process, culminating in interviews with Navy League members on 9 April. Please have your applications turned into LCDR Morse NLT 2 April. Navy League Scholarship Application

NJROTC Parent Association Scholarships

Each year the NJROTC Parent Association sponsors two or more $500 scholarships for graduating NJROTC cadets who continue their education. There is no military/ROTC commitment. Download application and return to the NSIs. Deadline is April 1.

Civilian Marksmanship Program

The Civilian Marksmanship Program ROTC scholarship is for any senior who applies for ROTC in college. You do not to have been awarded an ROTC scholarship. Each service (Army, Navy, Marine JROTC) have their own selection requirements. The Navy requires you are an NJROTC cadet planning on attending NROTC program (with our without an NROTC scholarship), and the Marines require you to be in MCJROTC.  But the Army only requires you to be a JROTC cadet and planning on attending Army ROTC (with or without an Army ROTC scholarship)...so you might be able to submit through the Army if you're going to a school that has Army ROTC.. Last year, all qualified applicants were selected for the scholarship, regardless of their level of participation on the marksmanship team. If you are interested in the scholarship, there is still time for you to become a marksmanship team member. If you do continue with ROTC and marksmanship, the scholarship is 'renewable' every year! Additional information at: http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/Scholarship.htm.

ROTC

The following information was sent to our unit by ROTCs and provided for the seniors that are still looking for a way to pay for college. ROTC is NOT the only way to pay for college, but it is an option. Of particular note, the Illinois Tuition Waiver Program does NOT have a military obligation, so you could take advantage of the program and not join the military.

Illinois State Tuition Waiver

Any ROTC program in Illinois, regardless of the branch of service, there is an option available to Illinois resident students that is funded by the state. The Illinois State Tuition Waiver, but sometime referred to as Illinois ROTC or another name, pays for all the tuition at a state school if the student takes ROTC and meets requirements (that vary from school to school...maintain a certain grade point, attend PT sessions, etc). It does not pay a stipend, but THERE IS NO MILITARY OBLIGATION for accepting the waiver. Applicants can usually apply year-round, depending on the demand.

University of Illinois  (UIUC)

UIUC Army ROTC provided information: AROTC UIUC. It contains a link to their website...you'll have to cut and paste to your browser.  (Note: this is typical of scholarships available at most Illinois state schools that have ROTC). Often Chicago schools 'partner' with schools that have ROTC...and at many schools you'll have more than one branch represented.

    IIT

The Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) provided their website at IIT: www.afrotc.iit.edu.

8th Grade Orientations and Class Visits

Cadet Visits to Middle Schools: Cadets can volunteer to contact their 8th grade administrators and teachers in the hopes of speaking directly to 8th graders about NJROTC. This should be coordinated through the Cadet Representative or the NSIs. There is a 'letter of introduction' available, but the intent is for cadets to make rekindle contact with educators they know and admired, and to then share their high school experience while representing NJROTC in classroom settings.  The 8th graders gain more insight into high school in general (and NJROTC in particular) and the cadet gains experience in organizational skills, public speaking, and initiative. Any Cadet that is going and is signing up a schedule date with a teacher, please inform the NSIs.  Letter of Introduction
